The Monsio family is a Genoese noble family that dates back to the 13th century. The family originally came from the village of Monsio, located in the hinterland of Genoa. The first members of the family were merchants and bankers, and they soon became one of the most influential families in Genoa. In the 14th century, the Monsio family began to occupy prominent positions in the city government. In 1339, Giovanni Monsio was elected doge of Genoa. The family continued to hold prominent positions in city government in the following centuries. The Monsios were also important patrons of art and culture. In the 15th century, the family commissioned the construction of the church of Santa Maria delle Vigne, one of the most important churches in Genoa. The family was also an important supporter of the Scuola di San Luca, Genoa's most important art school. The Monsio family continued to prosper
