Famiglia originaria del Molise assai antica e nobile propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. I nomi dei Montagnano sono ricordati in testi, atti notarili e contratti di vendita di terre e case fin da tempi assai remoti, dai quale appare che erano di condizione agiata e nobile. Un Guglielmo si segnalò per valor militare nella guerra corsa sotto gli ordini del Re Alfonso nel 1421, alla quale prese pur parte un Serafino della stessa famiglia che ricevette in premio i feudi di Ploaghe, Salvennero e Figuline. Nel 1425 ebbe in permuta le ville di Urgieghe, Noagra e Musellano. Andò quindi all'espugnazione di Monteleone con le truppe sassaresi, ed ebbe in feudo le ville di Giave e Cossaine, poi comprò da Nicolò Vignino le ville di Capula, Siligo, Banori e Terquilo.
