Questa celebre famiglia fu ascritta al Consiglio nobile di Padova nel 1081, ed i suoi membri furono insigniti del titolo di castellani. Possedette un forte castello in Montagnone, da cui trasse il proprio nome, ed altro pure ne teneva sulla vetta di Monscicco, e fu vassalla dell'abbazia di S. Silvestro di Nonantola. Fin dal 1077 troviamo questa famiglia ricca e potente in Padova e fuori, e si sa che possedeva in quel tempo le decime delle ville di Leone, Albignasego e Noventa. Perseguitata da Ezzelino, molti individui di essa perirono; pure non perdette del suo antico splendore, ed i superstiti, dopo cessata la tirrania, ricuperarono i loro beni e con lustro continuarono a distinguersi.
