Sehr alte und sehr edle genuesische Familie, ursprünglich aus Gavi, bekannt als Montaldo oder Montalti, von klarer und überlieferter Tugend, verteilt über die Jahrhunderte in verschiedenen Regionen Italiens, mit bedeutenden Siedlungen auf sardischem Gebiet. Unter den ersten Charakteren, über die wir Neuigkeiten haben, erinnern wir uns: Corrado Montaldo, der 1279 seinen Teil der Lordschaft von Gavi an die Gemeinde Genua verkaufte; Guglielmo Montaldo, Kapitän der Galeere gegen die Pisaner, blühte 1291; Paolo Montaldo, Botschafter beim Papst im Jahr 1340 und beim König von Frankreich im Jahr 1342.
