Muy antigua y muy noble familia genovesa, originaria de Gavi, conocida como Montaldo o Montalti, de clara y ancestral virtud, repartida a lo largo de los siglos en diferentes regiones de Italia, con importantes asentamientos en territorio sardo. Entre los primeros personajes de los que tenemos noticias, recordamos: Corrado Montaldo, quien vendió su parte del señorío de Gavi al Ayuntamiento de Génova, en 1279; Guglielmo Montaldo, capitán de la galera contra los pisanos, floreciente en 1291; Paolo Montaldo, embajador ante el Papa en 1340 y ante el rey de Francia en 1342. Tras el fallido golpe de Estado contra el dux Gabriele Adorno, la familia se trasladó a Asti y se refugió en la corte de Visconti.
