Famille génoise très ancienne et très noble, originaire de Gavi, connue sous le nom de Montaldo ou Montalti, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans différentes régions d'Italie, avec des implantations importantes en territoire sarde. Parmi les premiers personnages dont nous avons des nouvelles, nous nous souvenons: Corrado Montaldo, qui a vendu sa part de la seigneurie de Gavi à la municipalité de Gênes, en 1279; Guglielmo Montaldo, capitaine de galère contre les Pisans, florissant en 1291; Paolo Montaldo, ambassadeur auprès du Pape en 1340 et auprès du roi de France en 1342. Après l'échec du coup d'État contre le Doge Gabriele Adorno, la famille s'installe à Asti, trouvant refuge à la cour des Visconti. Ce n'est qu'en 1371, avec la nomination de Domenico Fregoso comme doge, que les membres de la famille retournèrent dans leur patrie. Leonardo Montaldo (Ceranesi, 1319 - Gênes, 14 juin 1384),
