Família de tradição antiga e nobre, que leva o nome do castelo de mesmo nome, além do Giogo, perto de Gavi, do qual eram senhores. Corrado Montalti vendeu sua parte de senhorio ao município de Gênova, 1279. Guglielmo Montalti, capitão da prisão contra os pisanos, 1291; e dois anos depois, ele construiu o primeiro sino que foi colocado na Torre Palazzo. Paolo Montalti foi embaixador do Papa em 1340; ao rei da França 1342. Leonardo, filho do referido Paolo, cônsul de Caffa, 1357; embaixador do rei de Aragão, 1359; comandante das galés genovesas a serviço do imperador de Constantinopla, 1362, de quem recebe a famosa Imagine Edessena (S. Sudario) como presente; embaixador em Turim, pela paz com Veneza, concluído por mediação do Conte Verde, 1381; eleito doge 1383, ele morreu dignamente no ano seguinte, amarrando a referida imagem à igreja de S. Bartolomeo degli Armeni, onde ele ainda é mantido
