Il primo a dar lustro a questa famiglia, che era di origine rustica e abitava nella villa delle Roncole presso Mirandola, dove era chiamata de' Montenari, fu l'avvocato Grazio, di Giovanni, (1750) il quale, nell'esercizio della professione forense, molto onore acquistò. Amante delle buone lettere, sacrificò alle Muse e fu ascritto agli "Ippocondriaci di Reggio Emilia". Il 14 luglio 1795 il duca Ercole III lo creava cittadino modenese, assieme ai figli e ai discendenti in perpetuo. Era pure ammesso agli onori della Corte ducale. Fin dal 1774 (7 gennaio) aveva ottenuto la nobiltà personale della Mirandola, onore che i figli di lui, Giovanni e Giulio, conseguirono per se e per le rispettive famiglie e discendenze, per deliberazione di quella Comunità in data 2 gennaio 1828, approvata dal Governo l'anno seguente il 27 marzo. Un figlio di Giovanni, Grazio iunior (dec. 1883), ingegnere, fu capitano di una centuria di civici
