Le premier à donner du prestige à cette famille, appelée Montanari ou Montanaro, qui était d'origine rustique et vivait dans la villa delle Roncole, près de Mirandola, où elle s'appelait de 'Montenari, fut l'avocat Grazio, di Giovanni, (1750) qui , dans l'exercice de la profession d'avocat, il a acquis beaucoup d'honneur. Amateur de bonnes lettres, il sacrifia aux Muses et fut attribué aux "Hippocondriacs de Reggio Emilia". Le 14 juillet 1795, le duc Ercole III le créa citoyen de Modène, ainsi que ses fils et descendants à perpétuité. Il a également été admis aux honneurs de la cour ducale. Depuis 1774 (7 janvier), il avait obtenu la noblesse personnelle de Mirandola, un honneur que ses fils, Giovanni et Giulio, ont obtenu pour eux-mêmes et pour leurs familles et descendants respectifs, par résolution de cette communauté le 2 janvier 1828, approuvée par le gouvernement le l'année suivante le 27 mars.
