Originaria di Como, à per suo capo stipite Luigi, decurione di quella città nel secolo XVI. Nel 1590 quattro fratelli Montanella si stabilirono in Torino; e un Roggiero fissò in seguito il suo domicilio in Chieri. Verso il 1630 un ramo di questa famiglia, nella persona dell'Avvocato Collegiato Sebastiano-Antonio, da Torino andò a stabilirsi in Vigone, formando così una nuova linea. I Montanella di Torino ebbero parte della signoria e il titolo di conti di Santena e di Baldissero. Della famiglia non si hanno più notizie da verso la metà del XIX secolo. Motto della famiglia: Si te fata vocant. Altro ramo. Una di quelle famiglie che dopo la morte di Mastino I della Scala, capitano generale della Veronese Repubblica, ebbero parte alla elezione di suo fratello Alberto; e nel 1279 Nicolò, Luchese, Nascinbene e Bonaventura Fontanella, fratelli, furono tra i consiglieri di Ezzelino.
