La famiglia trasse origine dall'omonimo luogo, di cui assunsero il nome, situato tra l'Ossona ed il Grue all'altezza di Villarvernia: da non confondere quindi con l'altro M. poco distiante da Voghera ora denominato "della Battaglia". IVi risiedevano sin dal XII sec. ed in Marengo possedevano beni come rilevasi da istrumento dl 19 dicembre 1168 (Cartario Alessandrino, I, 83); Martino di M. è teste in atto del primo maggio 1196 relativo a permuta di terreni tra il monastero di Rivalta ed i Trovamala (Cartari di Rivalta); Enrico di M. è tra i vassalli di Val Borbera che giurano fedeltà agli accordi stipulati tra i marchesi Malaspina ed il comune di Tortona in merito al castello di Mongiadrino; il 19 settembre 1228 la comunità di Capriata, tra cui Andrea di M., promette a Genova di non stipulare per cinque anni alcun trattato; il monastero di Rivalta ospita fra Bernardo che appare come
