I dinasti di Maona, antica rocca che sorgeva una volta tra Montecatini e Massa di Cozzile, furono chiamati anche Lambardi, e variando poi nome un'altra volta si dissero di Montecatini dalla signoria che tenevano di quel castello; nome che poi ritennero anche dopo la caduta del feudalismo, quando vivevano onorati cittadini in Lucca. I conti di Montecatini nel 1074 donarono la sesta parte del loro castello e del borgo ai Vescovi di Lucca, cedendo loro l'alto dominio, e riserbandone per sè la proprietà. Più trardi cedettero il resto del castello agli stessi Vescovi colle stesse condizioni, ma i conti nonostante la cessioine fatta, furono sempre i proprietari del castello e i rappresentatni dei Vescovi, la cui autorità venne meno alla morte del Vescovo Gregorio nel 1163. Sul cadere del XII secolo gli abitanti di Montecatini si costituirono in Comune, ed allora i conti, di signori che erano, doventarono semplici cittadini,
