Ceppo di questa celebre famiglia furono Buonconte e Taddeo nel XIII secolo, i quali discendevano da un ramo dei conti di Carpegna, che fatto acquisto del castello di Montefeltro ne presero il nome. Ambedue erano figli di Monfeltrino valoroso capitano, e si fecero inscrivere nella cittadinanza di Rimini. Buonconte, valorossisimo capitano al servizio dell'Imperatore Arrigo VI, di Filippo di Svevia, e di Federico Re di Napoli e di Sicilia, che fu poi imperatore, in riconoscenza de'suoi servigi, nel 1213 ebbe da quest'ultimo la città d'Urbino che lasciò a'suoi discendenti, i quali tennero quel dominio per circa tre secoli dando sette conti e tre duchi. Essi furono costantemente seguaci e moderatori del partito ghibellino ed ebbero grande influenza nelle Marche e nei paesi limitrofi, e furono signori di molte città. Notevoli sopratutti furono Guido conte di Montefeltro, signore di Pisa e di Urbino, che eletto capo dei Ghibellini di quel paese
