Il nome di questa casata ricorre la prima volta nel 1234 in un manoscritto dell'abate Bini, in cui è ricordato un "dominus....de Montenaco et S. de Montenaco subdiaconus". Il Palladio menziona nel 1256 un Brunetto signore di un castello di tal nome. Altri personaggi coll'appellativo de Montaniaco o de Cassaco ricorrono in scritture del sec. XIII; ma sono tutti nomi isolati, fors'anco appartenenti a famiglie d'altro sangue, consorti nel feudo, i quali, in epoca più a noi vicina, vennero riuniti in un nesso genealogico arbitrario e non documentabile, cui fu sovrapposto, quale capostipite, un favoloso Montegnà signore di Cassimberg che sarebbe vissuto nel 1200. Il primo personaggio storicamente certo è un Detmaro di Montegnacco ricordato fino dal 1299, e nel 1309 abitante a Udine, autore delle tre linee principali in cui si divise questa cospicua famiglia: la linea dei Montegnacco di Gemona; quella dei Montegnacco del Pozzo, e quella di
