Antica e potente famiglia, signora feudataria del castello omonimo dal quale trasse il proprio nome. Manfredo di Cardè, dopo essersi impadronito nel 1339 di Saluzzo a danno del marchese Tommaso, creò suo vicario generale Giovanni signore di Montemale il quale era uno de'suoi principali fautori. I signori di Montemale, perduto il loro feudo, e banditi dal marchesato di Saluzzo, ripararono in Cueno in cui si trovano menzionati fra le principali famiglie nella seconda metà del secolo XIV. Un Giorgio fu bailo per la regina di Napoli di Barcellonetta nel 1364, e l'anno appresso castellano di Demonte. La nobile famiglia Montemale ha per stemma: D'azzurro, al cuore umano al naturale.
