Apellido de origen gallego. Procede de Pontevedra, descendiente del Rey Don Fruela. Alfonso López de M. casó con Teresa Sánchez y tuvo a Tristán de M., que casó con Doña María Sarmiento, hija de García Fernández Sarmiento y de Teresa de Sotomayor. Descendientes de este linaje pasaron a Castilla y Portugal. Tambíen pasaron a Asturias y Canarias. Probó su nobleza en las Ordenes de Santiago y Carlos III y en la Real Compañía de Guardias Marinas. Don José María M. y Gago- Puga fue nombrado Marqués de Leis el, 1 de junio de 1844. Con el descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo, muchos fueron los hombres y mujeres que cruzaron el Atlántico en busca de Nuevos Horizontes y en concreto los que portando el apellido Montenegro, extendieron su linaje por América. Así pues, tras nuestra investigación realizada en el Archivo General de Indias, donde cosnta el nombre de los pasajeros
