Antichissimo casato genovese, le cui prime vestigia, rimontano al 1130, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La famiglia, passata in Napoli, già al tempo di re Federico II, il 14 aprile 1573, divenne possidente di alcuni terreni, tra cui il contado di Marigliano, grazie all'acquisto effettuato Geronimo Monteno, banchiere napoletano e tesoriere del Regno. In data 23 dicembre 1578, lo stesso Geronimo, ottenne il titolo di marchese di Marigliano, dall'Imperatore Filippo II. Inoltre, tal casato, in ogni epoca, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Tra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, ricordiamo: Riccardo, creato gran giustiziere del regno, da re Federico II, nel 1248; Giovanni, Vescovo di Famagosta, nel 1409; Pietro, arbitro fra nobili e popolari in Genova, nel 1418, ambasciatore a Venezia e Firenze, nel 1430, id. al duca di Milano, nel 1433, id. al Papa, nel
