La famiglia dei signori di Montereale appare in Friuli al principio del secolo XIII coi fratelli Varnerio e Albertino di Val di Croda, i quali il 25 maggio 1213 venivano investiti dal Patriarca d'Aquileia Wolchero di quella parte dei feudo che già tenevano nel castello di Montereale dai conti di Prata, e della signoria di Malnisio, tanto della porzione già spettante al Patriarca, quanto di quella che da quei conti i due fratelli avevano comperata. Delle genealogie barocche vorrebbero far risalire l'ascendenza di questa casa a un Roberto, che sarebbe venuto nel 930 di Francia in Friuli a difendere il Patriarca Ergelfredo. A parte che nel 930 sulla sedia di Aquileia sedeva, non si sa bene se un orso o un Lupo, la mancanza a quell'epoca di rogiti notarili e di cognomi rende impossibile di provare questa ed altre affermazioni del genere.
