Antica ed assai nobile famiglia sarda, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, in particolare in Lombardia, e d'Europa, con un importante insediamento in Spagna. Nel tempo fu conosciuta come Demontis, De Montis e Montis. Occorre notare che non sempre la forma originaria del cognome si manteneva intatta nei secoli con la sua primitiva grafia. Spesso a causa di trascrizioni errate, di trasformazioni dialettali secondo i luoghi ove la stirpe via via si portava, della scrittura incomprensibile degli scrivani etc., si avevano modificazioni della fonetica e della grafia. In ogni modo, tradizione vuole che questa famiglia abbia avuto culla nella città di Cagliari, ove già al tempo di Filippo IV di Spagna alcuni suoi esponenti furono capi di giustizia.
