Nobilissimo casato spagnolo, con prima residenza in Badajoz, ove si distinse con quel Juan, di Hernando de Montoya e di Catalina Sánchez, intrepido esploratore, attivo in politico e giudice, scomparso nel 1583. Nel XVII secolo, tal casato, passò, assumendo il predicato di Montoya, inizialmente in Napoli e, poi, in Barletta, al cui patriziato venne ascritto. L'aggregazione fu fatta dal notaio Bartolomeo Auditorio, il 1 marzo 1602, e ratificata poi dalla medesima nobiltà barlettana il 4 ottobre 1634. La famiglia, inoltre, si imparentò con la nobile famiglia Gentile. Tra i personaggi che, maggiormente, le diedero lustro, ricordiamo: Giovanni, 48° vescovo di Gallipoli, dal 9 giugno 1659 al 9 marzo 1667 e Francesco, ascritto nell'elenco dei Cavalieri dell'Ordine Gerosolimitano del Priorato di Barletta, nel 1732. Un altro ramo del casato, invece, pose dimora in Portogallo, in Vila de Alhandra. Ivi, sempre si distinse per gli eccelsi iureconsulti, uomini d'armi e di chiesa,
