Antiga e ilustre família napolitana, considerada um ramo da família Castiglion Morelli de Cosenza. Essa cognominação deve derivar do nome italiano medieval Morellus, do qual encontramos um exemplo em 1171 nos Annales Pisani: "... predicado Consule et Turchiarello e Tomasio quondam Uberti Sigerii et aliis, ceperunt. AD MCLXXI, Bulgarinus Anffossi e Morellus Guido Fornarii e Ugo Laggii cum IIIIor galeis super Ianuenses em Sardineam navigaverunt ... ". A família alcançou o posto de nobreza, com um Bernardino, decorado pelo imperador Carlos V, com o título de "soldado real" e cavaleiro da Ordem de Ouro, participando da vitoriosa batalha de Pavia, em 24 de fevereiro de 1525, contra as tropas Franceses de Francisco I, obtendo também o direito de adicionar a águia imperial austríaca ao brasão de armas. Os seguintes soldados pertenciam à família, que se destacou na campanha de 1860/61, pela defesa do Reino das Duas Sicílias da invasão piemontesa:
