Famiglia antichissima, ma con origini ignote. L'opinione che questa illustre casata piemontese discenda da una sorella di Olderico Manfredi marchese in Italia, padre della grande contessa Adelaide, padre della grande contessa Adelaide, sia per la caratteristica del nome di Manfredi, il quale contraddistingue uno dei tre colonnellati della famiglia, sia per il possesso della metà di Carmagna, riservatasi nel 1028 da Olderico Manfredi nell'atto di fondazione del monastero di Caramagna, mancaza di attendibilità. Dalla illustre alleanza, avvenuta verso il 1000 tra la figlia di Manfredo I marchese in Italia, e un personaggio di cui non è noto il nome, ma fratello di Guntero ceppo dei signori di Sommariva, sarebbero nati Merlo ed Anselmo, dai quali procederebbero tutti i successivi signori della famiglia. Da Merlo poi originerebbero i Bigliori e i Manfredi, mentre da Anselmo i Rorenchi. Certo si è che essa fu una delle più importanti e delle più antiche
