O local original deste sobrenome estava localizado na cidade de Morell (cujo nome levou), na área judicial de Tarragona. Espalhou-se por toda a Catalunha, e no ano de 1251 já existia em Maiorca, pois Bernardo Morell era nesse ano guardião do castelo de Alaró. Existiu uma casa muito importante deste apelido na vila de Alcudia, também em Maiorca, cujos particulares prestaram grandes serviços ao imperador Carlos V no tempo dos comuneros. O referido monarca, por decreto régio de 14 de outubro de 1525, concedeu-lhes privilégio perpétuo de franqueza de direitos municipais. Francisco M. foi empossado pelo espólio de cidadãos em 1456 e 1484.
