El primitivo solar de este apellido radicó en la villa del Morell (cuyo nombre tomó), del partido judicial de Tarragona. Se extendió por Cataluña, y en el año 1251 existía ya en Mallorca, pues Bernardo Morell era en aquel año alcaide del castillo de Alaró. Una casa muy importante de este apellido hubo en la villa de Alcudia, también en Mallorca, cuyos individuos prestaron grandes servicios al emperador Carlos V en la época de los comuneros. El citado monarca, por real cédula de 14 de octubre de 1525, les concedió privilegio perpetuo de franqueza de derechos municipales. Francisco M. fue jurado por el estamento de ciudadanos en 1456 y1484.
