Si vuole originaria dalla Francia e vanta a capostipite un Maurizio M., compagno di Goffredo di Buglione. Il Villabianca, scrive: "Prende l'origine dalla Francia, e da quel chiarissimo Maurizio M., il quale passò all'acquisto di Terra Santa insieme con Goffredo di Buglione, ottenuto avendo ivi pe' suoi servigi da esso Principe Goffredo, divenuto re di Gerusalemme nell'anno 1099, larghe concessioni di terreni presso il fiume Giordano, ove da lui fu edificato un castello fortissimo, e la terra di M. I suoi discendenti restarono in Francia, e qui stabiliti nella Navarra occuparono ivi i primi posti di quel regno, come di Contestabile, di maresciallo, ecc., condecorati più volte dell'alto onore del Sacro Ordine Gerosolimitano".E' certo che fu portata in Sicilia da uno Stefano, che ottenne nel 1556 la castellania di Girgenti in feudo, acquistò nel 1564 da Eleonora Gaetani e Zarbari il feudo Saccolino, acquistò pure da Nicolò Giacomo de Guglielmo
