Entre los nobles de Romaña, los orígenes de esta familia son muy antiguos, provienen de ese Marius Scotus que en 773 dC descendió en Italia junto a Carlomagno contra los lombardos y dio origen al apellido Marescotti, señores de Bagnacavallo en Romagna. El Marescotti varias veces, a lo largo de los siglos, se relacionó con el Morsiani hasta agregar su apellido a este último. El progenitor directo del linaje, Morsiano Fortebraccio Morsiani, participó en el siglo XIV en la Cruzada contra los Forlivese y, junto con el famoso líder de la Romaña, Alberico da Barbiano, se opuso a los mercenarios ingleses en la victoriosa batalla de Marino en 1379 en defensa del Papa Urbano VI y en contra de El establecimiento del antipapa Clemente VII.
