Ancienne famille sicilienne, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie et du monde. L'origine de ce patronyme, selon des généalogistes faisant autorité, doit être recherchée dans une modification du terme latin "mortellarius" (= ramasseur de myrtes), probablement motivée par le fait qu'il s'agissait de l'activité des fondateurs ; on se souvient aussi que dans l'Antiquité le myrte, consacré à Vénus, était largement utilisé pour aromatiser et conserver les mets et les vins. Certains auteurs prétendent faire descendre cette lignée de la famille noble sicilienne, d'origine milanaise, Morello ou Mortello, qui possédait la saline de Fragiovanni et le fief de Trabonello et qui fut illustrée par un : un Giovanni, juge du tribunal prétorien de Palerme en 1711-12, des appellations en 1717-18, du Consistoire en 1724, du Grand Tribunal Civil en 1730-31-32 ; un Giuseppe, juge prétorien de Palerme en 1733-34 et un Francesco
