Dice Francisco Piferrer que Carlos M., que fué rico mercader del siglo XII, es el primero de estos apellido de quien se tiene noticia. Le sucedió Onofre M., de quien fué hijo un esforzado guerrero que peleó bajo las banderas del Rey aragonés don Jaime I "el Conquistador". El mismo autor añade que se cree que esta familia es originaria de Italia, donde fundó una villa denominada Mortera. Al venir a España creó varios lugares del mismo nombre, sobre todo en el Valle de Trasmiera (Santander), donde hay un lugar llamado Mortera, del Concejo de Valle de Piélagos. En él moró una familia de este apellido, sin que pueda precisarse si lo tomó del lugar o lo comunicó a éste. En Cataluña hubo también de este apellido y allí entroncaron los M. con la Casa de Cerbellón por el matrimonio, celebrado en 1338, de Ambrosio M. con doña Silia de Cerbellón. A principios del siglo XIV, Enrique de M. casó con doña Catalina Milán y fué su hijo primogénito Juan de M., esposo de una señora francesa de apellido Masmelán.
