Antica ed illustre famiglia di origine napoletana. Ebbe come capostipite Sergio, Console di Napoli nel 1127 che, durante il governo indipendente della Repubblica, si oppose alle armi vittoriose di Ruggero Normanno, quando mosse all'acquisto del Regno, finché, dopo alterne vicende di guerra, giurata fede al novello Re, si recò a combattere contro Rainulfo, Conte di Puglia e, scontratosi a campale battaglia presso Siponto, il 2 ottobre 1137 morì combattendo. Un Roberto, per i meriti del suo avo Sergio, ebbe concesso dal Re Ruggero nel 1140 il Castello di Mutola, in Terra di Otranto, con suoi uomini e vassalli, castello che dette il nome ai discendenti del detto Roberto. Un Carlo fu tra i baroni che nel 1161, sotto Re Guglielmo, presero parte all'Impresa di Terra Santa. Un Sergio nel 1190 fu Console di Napoli. Un Roberto fu Cavaliere al tempo di Re Tancredi.
