La famiglia di parte guelfa fu come tesoriere del Papa ed ospitò nel suo palazzo d'Oltrarno la prelatura romana. Nel 1273 vi abitò Gregorio X, nel 1280 il Cardinale latino, nel 1314 Pietro fratello del Re Roberto di Napoli, e nel 1326 Gualtieri duca d'Atene quando si recò a Firenze come vicario del Duca di Calabria. Vanni e Tommaso cavalieri dello speron d'oro e condottieri di molto valore. Dettero alla Repubblica 4 gonfalonieri e 7 priori e tre senatori durante il Principato. Pier-Giannozzo, figlio del senator Giulio, fu da Napoleone I innalzato al grado di conte dell'impero francese.
