Família antiga e muito nobre do norte da Europa germânico, com povoações muito importantes na Suíça, de clara e ancestral virtude, que se espalharam, ao longo dos séculos, pelo norte da Itália e, em particular, na região do Vêneto. A primeira pessoa que conhecemos é um Hainrich Murer, chanceler da Corte de Veringen, que floresceu em 1271. Na Alemanha, a família sempre se distinguiu por altos cargos administrativos e governamentais.
