Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Nord Europa germanico, con un importantissimo insediamenti in Svizzera, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, nel Settentrione d'Italia e, in particolare, nella regione Veneto. Il primo personaggio di cui abbiamo notizia è un Hainrich Murer, cancelliere della Corte di Veringen, fiorente nel 1271. In Germania la famiglia si d'altronde sempre distinta per elevate cariche a livello amministrativo e governativo. In Svizzera la famiglia ha goduto nobiltà in Basilea ed in Zurigo e si è illustrata anche per aver dato i natali ad eccelsi artisti, quali: Josias, maestro che ha realizzato, tra le altre, la vetrata della corporazione dei fabbri e dei carpentieri, fiorente nel 1605, ed Enrico, celebre miniaturista, fiorente nel 1648.
