Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Regno di Napoli, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, con un importantissimo insediamento nel Regno di Sardegna. Memorie familiari vogliono essa originaria della Toscana e, con più precisione, della città di Firenze; città quest'ultima a cui diede cinque gonfalonieri di giustizia, primo dei quali nel 1294. Dai documenti oggi in nostro possesso, possiamo però affermare che la famiglia di Muro fosse presente nel Regno di Napoli già molto prima, ossia al tempo del dominio normanno. Si ricordi il nobil signore Nicola di Muro, sindaco della città di Napoli, fiorente sul calare del XII secolo. Le fortune familiari continuarono anche sotto il dominio angioino ed infatti un Raul de Muro fioriva quale feudatario al tempo di Carlo I mentre un Carlo Francesco di Muro fu ornato di diverse cariche militari sotto Carlo II.
