Stando al Baronio ed al Villabianca, si trova questa nobile ed antica famiglia derivare da un Cajo Muzio Scevola romano l'anno 507 av. G. i di cui successori giusta Mugnos sotto quella repubblica illustraronsi colle cariche consolari, tribunizie, pretoriane, pontificie ecc. Intanto un ramo di essa al dir di Cantù passò in Genova, e da qui a sua volta altro ramo nel 1500 in Siciilia mercè un Vincenzo M., come attestano il Cutelli ed il Villabianca medesimo. Ivi commendansi: un Giambattista investito dei feudi di Jannello e Cascacino 1639, maestro notaro del senato di Palermo 1640; un Francesco barone di Grottarossa, Giuffo e Capisotto investito 1639, non che di detti feudi di Jannello e Cascacino 1643, essendo stato maestro notaro perpetuo del senato di Palermo 1623; maestro notaro ed archivario della R. Corte Pretoriana, carica comprata in feudo 1637, maestro segreto del regno 1640, e giudice di detta R. Corte
