La famiglia Nandini è originaria dalla Toscana (Siena e Firenze), ma fin dal sec. XIV essa figura tra le principali e nobili di Camerino. Ebbe suoi membri che vestirono l'abito del S.M. Ordine di Malta. Nel 1535 l'imperatore Carlo V la decorò del titolo comitale, ed Alessandro Nandini fu creato marchese di Lanciano e Rustano in linea primogeniale, con chirografo 30 maggio 1753. da Benedetto XIV. Fra Melchiorre (1399-1573) rinomato per dottrina e valor militare, cavaliere dell'ordine Gerosolimitano, e per esso cancelliere generale a Rodi dove tuttora nel Palazzo dei Cavalieri vedesi scolpito il suo stemma, visitatore e correttore della Francia nel 1446, Presidente e procuratore generale per l'ordine alla Corte di Roma e per lo stesso oratore presso Paolo II.
