Ancora ai nostri giorni lassù nelle vallate dei Sette Comuni si ripete la tradizione che l'antica famiglia sia originaria dalla Normandia. Alla fine del secolo XI come un Cantel, o Chantel sia, al seguito dei primi normanni sbarcati in Sicilia, venuto nella nostra bella penisola e che i membri della famiglia abbiano poi militato sotto le bandiere degli Ordelaffi di Forlì, è cosa non bene accertata. A questo proposito gli storici trevigiani affermano che nel biennio 1386-87 un Lodovico, capo della sesta schiera delle soldatesche di Giovanni Ordelaffo, comandante degli eserciti scaligeri, rimase tra le mani del Carrarese. Il C. e l'Odelaffo condotti a Padova, unitamente a migliaia di prigionieri e ad un ricco bottino, fra cui vi erano 211 meretrici inghirlandate di fiori, furono favoriti poi dal principe di una colazione nel suo palazzo. Il conte di Porcia, compreso fra i prigionieri, potè riscattarsi mercè l'esborso di 250 ducati
