La famiglia, dal latino Carolis, denominati anche Carlis, Caporis costituiscono un nucleo di famiglie italiane che maggiormente si distinsero per le virtù civiche, letterarie e militari. In premio di tali qualità ottennero, quasi dovunque dimorarono, varie ricompense nobiliari. Un C. Narlo di Giovanni, originario con i Banchieri, nobili di Pistoia, ed incluso in quella nobiltà. Di questa famiglia, diramatasi in seguito nel modenese, si legge che al 30 luglio 1416 Bartolomeo da Modena, procuratore del marchese Nicolò d'Este, convenne a Brescia per stipulare una tregua colla Signoria di Venezia e con Pandolfo Malatesta. I Narlo si trovano in seguito a Firenzuola e sono compresi fra i nobili di Fiesole; a Ferrara assunsero il motto De-Car-lis e si affermarono specialmente nelle belle lettere.
