La familia es de origen sienés, se dio a conocer en el siglo XVII gracias a la cav. Francesco, que fue un distinguido pintor de su tiempo. Sus hijos, el sacerdote Antonio y Cav. Giuseppe Nicola, se perfeccionó en Roma en el arte de su padre, en el que lo superaron con creces. En las iglesias y palacios de Siena, muchas de sus obras permanecen, ejecutadas entre finales del siglo XVII y la primera mitad del siglo XVIII; en algunos de ellos también otro de sus parientes, Antonio. Un hijo de Giuseppe llamado Apollonio también fue un buen pintor, aunque inferior a su padre y tío. En el año 1707 el imper. Giuseppe I otorgó la nobleza general a Giuseppe Nicola, asignándole un escudo de armas en el que se encuentran las referencias al arte profesado por el concesionario. R.
