Uma família Mantuan muito nobre, originária de Ferrara. "Nobiles viri", o bispo de Ravenna os chama desde 1393 e em 1427 eles foram investidos pela família Este: "de honorofico cum mero et mixto imperio". Os primeiros a se mudar para Mântua, um Giovanni no ano de 1478 e para esta cidade, logo deram dois prelados ilustres Andrea e Gian-Battista. Cosimo (e não Antonio, como D'Arco quer), colocado muito jovem na corte de Bona Sforza, rainha da Polônia, tinha o título de "Íntimo cavalheiro", até o rei Sigismundo I de seu marido lhe conceder o título de Auratus eques (Cavaleiro do Espora) d'Oro) "ter ense nostra tactum", conforme lido no magnífico diploma original com magníficas miniaturas datadas de Cracóvia em 30 de novembro 1544. No entanto, eles tinham o título de conde, apenas do duque de Mântua Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga, com um diploma datado de 26 de junho de 1681 concedido
