Nobilissima famiglia mantovana, originaria però di Ferrara. "Nobiles viri", li chiama il Vescovo di Ravenna fin dal 1393 e nel 1427 furono investiti dagli Estensi: "de feudo honorofico cum mero et mixto imperio". Il primo a trasferirsi a Mantova, un Giovanni nell'anno 1478 e a questa città diede tosto due distinti prelati Andrea e Gian-Battista. Cosimo (e non Antonio come vuole il D'Arco) collocatosi giovanissimo alla Corte di Bona Sforza regina di Polonia ne ebbe il titolo di "Intimo gentiluomo", finchè re Sigismondo I di lei marito lo insigniva del titolo di Auratus eques (Cavaliere dello Sperone d'Oro) "ter ense nostro tactum" come leggesi nel magnifico diploma originale a superbe miniature datato da Cracovia 30 nov. 1544. Ebbero però il titolo di Conte, soltanto dal Duca di Mantova Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga, con diploma del 26 giugno 1681 concesso a Francesco che divenne poi suo Segretario di Stato; questi vestì anche
