Ascritti all'arte dei rigattieri, nel 1382 cominciarono a conseguire il priorato, che ottennero 27 volte. Bernardo Negro, di Nero, di Filippo, fu uno dei venti deputati a reprimere la ribellione dei Volterrani nel 1472, e ambasciatore a Pisa nel 1482, e l'anno appresso commissario generale di guerra in Lunigiana. Egli fu gonfaloniere nel 1474, 1487 e 1496, ma appena compita la sua carica, accusato di essere a parte di una congiura per atterrare il governo e richiamare i Medici in città, fu decapitato in età di 72 anni.
