La famiglia è oriunda da Bergamo donde venne a Roma nel XVII secolo. Dette i natali al dotto ed eminente gesuita padre Giulio, morto nel 1678. Andrea, nato nel 1710, divenne segretario dei Brevi e fu fatto cardinale nel 1766 d Clemente XIII. A lui si deve la grandezza della famiglia, aggregata alla nobiltà romana nel 1746 in persona di Stasino che nel 1752 fu Conservatore di Roma. La famiglia venne poi compresa fra i nobili coscritti. Il conte Baldassarre nel 18750 fu Gonfaloniere di Velletri e venne ascritto a quel patriziato insieme alla sua famiglia. Il titolo di conte, venne concesso ad Antonio nel 1723. La Consulta Araldica nel 1901 ascrisse i fra alla famiglia patrizi coscritti romani. Il conte Giuseppe, erede dell'ultimo duca D. Luigi Caffarelli (vedi questo nome) fu autorizzato da Sua Santità Pio IX ad assumere il cognome ed il titolo di duca Caffarelli. L'attuale duca
