Excellente noblesse que l'on trouve sous les noms de Nerestang, plus anciennement Neyrestang (Nigro-Stagno), ducs de Gadagne. Berceau: le château de Neyrestang, paroisse de Falgoux (Haute-Auvergne). Un chevalier croisé (1096). Etienne Neyrestang était bailli des montagnes d'Auvergne (1291-1307). Des capitaines châtelains de Claviers (1493); un abbé commendataire des bénédictins de l'abbaye de la Bénisson-Dieu en Forez (1612); deux maréchaux de camp (1615-1639); quatre grands maîtres des ordres de N.-D. du Mont-Carmel et de Saint-Lazare (1607), pendant près d'un siècle, etc. Les baronnies de St-Didier-la-Séauve, d'Aurec, de la Chapelle et d'Oriol, acquises le 22 avril 1609, de la maison de la Roue, par Jean-Philibert, marquis de Nérestang, furent érigées en marquisat sous le nom de Nérestang en 1619. Il paya à l'évêque du Puy le 15 juillet 1622, les droits de lods résultant de l'acquisition de la baronnie de St-Didier. Charles-Achille, marquis de Nérestang, baron de St-Didier, d'Aurec, etc., fils de Jean et de Ennemonde-Joachim de Harlay, acquit de la maison de Lévis-Ventadour, le 5 septembre 1673, la baronnie de Roche-en-Régnier et ses dépendances. Il en rendit foi et hommage à l'évêque du Puy le 21 septembre 1673. Son petit-fils, le marquis de Nérestang, duc de Gadagne, mourut sans postérité le 7 février 1733.
