Questa antica famiglia che ebbe cariche ed onori e risiedette in Pistoia è da ritenersi un ramo della famiglia dalla quale si diramarono anche i Niccolai. Famiglia anteriore al 1300. E' da ritenersi che questi Niccolai detti primi e i Niccolaucci siano rami della stessa famiglia. I primi mancarono nel secolo quattordicesimo. Altri Niccolai ebbero la cittadinanza pistoiese: quelli di Arezzo il 17 Luglio 1346, quelli di Prato il 23 settembre 1379, ed altri, di contado, nel 1584. Questa famiglia esercitò la mercatura ed ebbe in ogni tempo alti uffci e dignità ed illustri parentadi. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi, e il loro casato da' nomi proprii paterni, e de'
