The surname 'Nicholas' is of English, and Welsh origin . It is derived from Greek personal name 'Nikolaos', composed of the elements 'nike' victory and 'laos' people. The spelling with the -ch- first occurred as early as the twelfth century, and became firmly established at the time of the Reformation. Saint Nicholas was a fourth century bishop of Myra in Lycia, about whom nothing factual is known, although a vast body of legend grew up around him. He was venerated in the Orthodox Church as well as the Catholic church. He became the patron saint of Russia and Greece, as well as of children, sailors, merchants, and pawnbrokers. His feast day is the sixth of December, and among the many roles which legend has assigned to him is that of bringer of Christmas presents, in the guise of 'Santa Claus'; which is an alteration of the Dutch form of the name, 'Sinterklaas'. Public and Civil registry archive's confirm that the surname 'Nicholas' and or it's variant's, date as far back as the thirteenth century were a 'William fil Nicoll', from the county of Salopshire, England, is recorded on the Hundred Rolls in 1273. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definitely determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive's confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain 'Richard', aged twenty-two, a husbandman by trade, from the county of Devonshire, England. He emigrated to North America in 1774, sailing from the Port of London aboard the ship named the 'Neptune' on the fifth of September, arriving in Maryland on the twelfth of the same, where he served as an indentured servant. Today, 'Nicholas' is the 'Nine hundred and eightieth' most common surname in North America.
