The family originated in Florence, where they were matriculated in the arts of wool, silk and doctors and apothecaries and where they enjoyed the highest honors; with Bartolomeo, who was part of the lordship as Prior in the year 1426, they moved for bargaining reasons to Barga and Carrara, practicing the wool industry. With sovereign rescript of 1 July 1836, dr. Niccolò di Gio. Domenico, together with his paternal uncles dott. Ermenegildo and Avv. Angiolo, was ascribed to the Florentine nobility. The aforementioned dr. Niccolò, who in 1834 had obtained the authorization to add the surname of the adopter Giuseppe Gamba, was also rewritten on 15 February 1838 decorated with the nobility of Livorno where he lived and where he contracted marriage with the noble woman Ermellina Atena, by Domenico Castelli .
