Illustre noblesse de robe, originaire du Vivarais, encore représentée. On trouve son nom diversement écrit Nicolai et Nicolay. Filiation suivie depuis Jean-Nicolas Nicolai, père de noble Jean, demeurant au Bourg-St-Andéol, diocèse de Viviers (1479). Cette maison, maintenue le 14 mars 1670, a fourni une longue suite non interrompue de premiers présidents en la Chambre des Comptes de Paris (1506-1774). L'un d'eux, Jean, accompagna le roi Charles VIII au voyage de Naples. On trouve encore sous ce nom: un évêque comte de Verdun (1754); un évêque de Béziers (1771); un chevalier de St-Jean de Jérusalem (1715); un lieutenant du roi en Languedoc (1781); des officiers supérieurs; un maréchal de France (1775); un gouverneur de Marseille (1756), de Wilna (1812); des lieutenants généraux (1748-1814); un chambellan de Napoléon Ier (1812), etc. Grandes alliances. Barons de Jonchères et des États du Velay, par le mariage (2 juillet 1721) de Joseph-Louis, baron de Sabran, etc., avec Louise de Saint-André de St-Just, dame de Jonchères. Leur fils Louis-Guillaume-Scipion-Jean, qualifié en 1779, marquis de Nicolai, baron de Sabran et de Jonchères, etc., capitaine de cavalerie, lieutenant pour le roi de la province de Languedoc, vendit Jonchères aux Sauzet par acte du 26 avril 1781.
