Antichissima famiglia siciliana, la quale, al dir del Galluppi, godette nobiltà in Messina dal secolo XIII al secolo XVIII. Un Girolamo ottenne, con privilegio del 18 ottobre 1687 la concessione del titolo di barone di Roccadoro; un Carlo, con privilegio del 29 giungo 1723, fu decorato del titolo di barone di Villagrande; un Pietro Paolo tenne la carica di acatapano nobile in Acireale nel 1746-47; un barone Paolo, fu capitano di giustizia di detta città nel 1760-61, e quest'ultima carica tenne nel 1797-98; un Sebastiano, che occupò in detta città di Acireale la carica di patrizio nel 1804-1805. Oggigiorno, tal casato, risulta essere stato iscritto, nell'elenco ufficiale definitivo delle famiglie nobili e titolate della regione siciliana, con il titolo di barone di Villagrande, in persona del signor Carmelo Nicolosi, di Pietro Paolo, di Carmelo. Altro ramo. Antica e nobile famiglia di Padova, la cui blasonatura è riportata dal commendator G.B.
