Nicolás è un cognome patronimico e, come tale, è portato da famiglie di origini diverse. Uno di loro aveva molto da offrire nella regione di Santillana (Santander), secondo la testimonianza di Francisco Lozano. Un altro si stabilì a La Rioja, principalmente nella città di Fuentemayor, del partito giudiziario di Logroño, e in quello di Anguiano, del partito giudiziario di Nájera. Lo attestano gli scrittori Manuel Antonio Brochero e Miguel de Salazar, aggiungendo che da La Rioja arrivarono per servire Don Jaime I nella conquista di Malloca, dove furono chiamati Nicolao, e questi autori citano anche il cognome N., considerando che è lo stesso di Nicolao e Nicolás, ma a supporto di ciò non forniscono alcun dato. Citano concretamente un N., inventore di un certo strumento di guerra, che aiutò il suddetto monarca aragonese nelle conquiste di Maiorca e Valencia "essere il re di grande beneficio per loro la sua assistenza
