L'origine della cognominizzazione dovrebbe derivare da toponimi come Marina di Nicotera nel catanzarese o Nicotera nel vibonese. Secondo alcune ricostruzioni araldiche, in corso di verifica, la famiglia ha la medesima agnazione dei Nicotera di Calabria. Lo stemma della famiglia risulta ignoto o perso tuttavia in archivio esiste un disegno di cui si sono perse le fonti e riportiamo in attesa di ulteriori accertamenti.
